3,5-Dihydroxybenzoic acid (10 kg.) is dissolved in water (50 l.) and caustic soda (12 kg.).  Dimethylsulfate (13.4 kg.) is added at 20-40℃. with agitation.  After 15 min. further dimethylsulfate (13.4 kg.) is added followed by 15 min. agitation.  The mixture is heated to 100℃. and agitation for 5 hours.  Caustic soda (3.3 kg.) dissolved in water (3.5 l.) is then added to the hot solution.  After coolong to 50-60℃. the mixture is acidified with 20% hydrochloric acid.  The precipitate is filtered off, washed acid free and recrystallised from alcohol (1:5).

Yield of dimethoxybenzoic acid (M. p. 184℃) = 6.5 kg. = 55% theory from dihydroxybenzoic acid.
