Plant: 1 Cast iron pan, 2000 l., with agitator 65-70 r.p.m. Gas heating and coil for cooling.

1 Cast iron measure vessel for o-nitrotoluene.
Materials: 420 kg. o-Nitrotoluene. 1680 kg. Chlorosulphonic acid. 6600 kg. Icg.
Method:
1680 kg. of chlorosulphonic acid are measured into the gas heated kettle and the o-nitrotoluene than run in with agitation and water cooling. The temperature of the sulphonation must not rise above 40℃. This temperature is maintained for 1 hour, and then raised slowly to 50℃. The heat of reaction then carries the temperature to 60-65℃. After heating to 70-75℃. for 2 hours, it is raised slowly to 100-105℃., kept at this temperature for a further 2 hours and finally cooled by coil to 20-25℃.
The sulphonation mass is run into the brick-lined vat containing 1000 l. of water plus 1500 kg. of ice, more ice (5000 kg.) being added to keep the temperature at 0-5℃. The temperature after completion of precipitation must not excess 10℃. It is agitated for 1 hour, filtered on the nutsche and washed with 1000 l. of cold water.
Yield : 82-84% theory.

在2000 L铸铁锅中加入1680 kg氯磺酸,然后在搅拌及水冷下加入420 kg 邻硝基甲苯。 磺化温度不应超过40℃,在此温度保持1小时。然后缓缓升至50℃,反应热又将温度带至60-65℃,在70-75℃加热2小时后又缓慢升温至100-105℃,在此温度保持2小时,最后冷却到20-25℃后。
磺化物流入10000 L砖衬槽中,其中有1000 L水和1500 kg冰,在加入5000 kg冰,以保持温度在0-5℃,在沉淀完成后温度不应超过10℃。 搅拌1小时,抽滤,用1000 L冷水洗。 产品得率82-84%。
