Condensation product of p-Aminodiphenylamine sulphonic
acid and 1-chloro-2:4-dinitrobenzene.
A lead-lined vessel of 4,500 litres capacity fitted with a leaden heater coil and reflux
condenser is charged with 1,800 litres
water and 90 kg. soda followed by 200
kg. p-Amino-diphenylamine sulphonic acid 100%. When this has dissolved, 153 kg. 1-chloro-2:4-dinitrobenzene is
added, when the pan closed and heated to 950C.
for 4 – 5 hours.
The charge is blown into 1,000 litres water at 400C. and the dyestuff
precipitated with 1,500 litres saturated
salt solution. After stirring for 10 minutes with the salt, the agitator
is stopped otherwise the crystals become very small and filter
badly. Next day the batch is pumped (using Kreisel
pumps) into a filter press, but not washed, and dried at 90 – 1000C

Notes:
Because of a tendency to explode, the product is not ground in a Perplex mill or disintergrator but in a ball mill and finished off in a “ Tiedke” mixer.
The resulting dyestuff is almost always rather redder and purer than type, due to the
excellent quality of the p-Amino-diphenylamine sulphonic acid delivered from Wolfen. It is corrected to type shade
by blending with some of the much greener and duller product obtained by a
similar condensation with the inclusion of 1/2 to 1 kg. Copper Sulphate before heating.
