2-Chloro-5-nitrobenzoic acid is reduced with iron and
hydrochloric acid.
Materials: 435 kg. 100%
2-chloro-5-nitrobenzoic acid. 400 kg.
Iron powder. 300 l. Hydrochloric
acid 30%
10 kg. Chalk. 60 kg. Caustic
soda. 10 kg. Activated carbon.
Process:
A vat of 5,000 l. capacity is charged with 800 l. of
water, and 435 kg. of 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzoic acid and heated with direct steam
to 500C. Sufficient caustic soda to neutralize is added, a clear
solution being obtained.
The reduction vessel is meanwhile charged with 800 l.
of water, 400 kg. of iron powder and enough hydrochloric acid to start the
reaction. The contents of the reduction vessel are heated by direct steam to 950C.
with agitation, and the solution of 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzoic acid slowly run in
at this temperature. More hydrochloric acid may have to be added to complete the
reduction. When finished, the reduction gives a colorless outspread when
spotted on filter paper.
Chalk is added to neutralize, followed by the addition
of 50 kg. of caustic soda.
The iron oxide sludge is filtered off. Washed with hot
water and the filtrate and washings combined (volume, 10000 l.). Hydrochloric
acid is added to make definitely acid to Congo, 10 kg. of activated carbon
added, and the solution re-filtered. The screened liquors are used directly
without isolation in color manufactures. Yield = 90-91% theory.

在5000 L桶中加入800 L水和435 kg 2-氯-5-硝基苯甲酸,用直接蒸汽加热到500C。加入足够量的苛性钠进行中和,得到清晰的溶液。
另在还原锅内加入800 L水,400 kg 铁粉和足够启动反应的盐酸,用直接蒸汽加热到950C并进行搅拌,2-氯-5-硝基苯甲酸溶液在此温度缓缓流入,还需加入更多盐酸(总量300 L)以完成还原反应。反应完成后还原液在滤纸上的渗圈为无色。
加入10 kg 碳酸钠中和,随后加入50 kg 苛性钠。
过滤掉氧化铁泥,热水洗,滤液和洗水合并,体积10000 L。加盐酸使对刚果红呈酸性。加入10 kg活性炭,在过滤。滤清液不经分离,直接用于制备染料。收率为理论量的90-91%。
